A New Year of Wishes

The Sustainable Wishing Tree, community sculpture that was created by members of the public at the Lane Cove Men’s Shed, led and designed by sculptor Mark Swartz was completed late last year before we closed for the holidays. Now with the tree on display Centrehouse & Gallery Lane Cove started the new year with some great kids and grandparents workshops to create the beautiful paper wishes to complete the community project.

We had french paper artist Marine Coutroutsios here to help the groups create special paper wishes on seed paper to hang on the wishing tree. These  papers are filled seeds from native Australian flowers so we will wait & watch to see if any of these wishes fall and turn into new flowers.

This Wednesday we opened the "Into the Future" Eve Vonwiller Youth Art Awards exhibition. The Mayor of Lane Cove, Cr. David Brooks Horn and this years judge Jane Blundell were here to announce the winner of the three sections.

We had a fun night with Galaxy Girl entertaining everyone as people took in the variety,energy and imagination of the artworks on display. Thanks to all the amazing artist who submitted work for this years competition, it has created a fantastic exhibition looking at this futuristic theme. Please come and visit us at the gallery to see these wonderful works on display until the 6th September.

HOLIDAY FUN

We have just wrapped up another Kids Holiday Session at Centrehouse, we had two weeks with lots of new faces and interesting ideas!

We are so excited that we had artist Laura Jade Hindes taking some brand new over 11's workshops for us this term. They were such a huge success with some fantastic fashion and portrait drawing, we will definitely have to do some more over 11's classes next time.

We were happy to welcome a few new teachers to the Centrehouse team this holidays. Along with Laura Jade Hindes, sculptor and teacher Mark Swartz brought a new three dimensional edge to our program running some wire sculpture and jewellery classes along with some of our every popular pottery workshops. Finally we also welcome artist and teacher Szilvia Gyorgy who came on board to do some fantastical pottery and painting with us.

As always, all our classes were bursting with fun and creativity coming up with some fantastic artworks. Now we wanted to remind you all that all these new creations can be entered into the Eve Vonwiller Youth Art Awards 2014 coming up at Gallery Lane Cove or even make something new!

Collagraph Printing with Bernhardine Mueller

Last month, artist Bernhardine Mueller ran her yearly print workshop in the Centrehouse Print Studio, with some amazing results. There were seven students, a mix of seasoned print makers and absolute beginners who made their collagraph plates from mount board off cuts (a much cheaper option than copper and metal plates). Once the design is scratched, cut and/or collaged on, the whole plate is covered with shellac to ensure the ink does not seep into the plate.

Collagraphs are unique in their ability to create textures from fabrics, ephemera, paper, bark etc, as long as the textures are thin and will not damage the press when the plate goes through the rollers.

Centrehouse has two presses available for students and you can see the great results below.

Saturday 5th Oct at 11am, saw the artist attend the gallery for an artist talk & tea session with a Q & A  led by Tour leader artist Pamela Fairburn. We had a great group where all the artist discussed their work, inspiration and travel. 

The exhibition continues until the 12th October so don't miss out. 

FLOWING

Wednesday Night saw the opening of the latest exhibition from printmaking group Open Bite, now in their twenty-second year, with their exhibition of printmaking Flow.

 The exhibition was officially opened by artist and master printmaker Bernhardine Mueller and the celebration continued as guests mingled with the artists and enjoyed the new works.

The many and varied Open Bite printmakers have been delighted to dive right in and paddle about in this year’s exhibition theme. They have applied their individual approaches and wide ranging printmaking techniques to produce a pool of works depicting watery worlds, creatures of the deep, figures in motion and the steady ebb and flow of a lifespan.

With a collection on the theme of Flow, this fresh exhibition exploring the medium from etching, lino and woodcut to en-caustic wax tiles and installations aims to make a splash.

Dont miss the free artist’s talks and Japanese Woodblock demonstration at the Gallery, 21st September Saturday 11am which will provide an insight into the printmaking processes from conception to completion.

Not one but two!

Friday 23rd August saw the opening of not one but two of Centrehouse's Art Prizes. The Eve Vonwiller Youth Art Award for primary and secondary students, and the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award for emerging artists were opened one after the other in adjacent gallery spaces within Gallery Lane Cove. Whilst the double opening promised for a busy evening, the overwhelming response to calls for entries into the Lloyd Rees Award insured this would be the case, with entries exceeding those of previous years. As a biennial event, this exhibition of the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award is the first time the award has been held within Centrehouse's relatively new premises of Gallery Lane Cove, previously being presented within the Lane Cove Council Building.

Both openings were a huge success. The diversity of work and high standard of entries overwhelmed visitors to the gallery and made difficult work for the judges.

Artists Ann Cape, Kevin Connor and Guy Warren judged the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award, naming South Australian artist Loique Allain as the overall award winner for her large scale lino print work Bull Creek Road. Loique traveled all the way from Adelaide to attend the event and accept her award. Highly Commended went to Sydney based artist Edgar Schilter for his work San Miguel De Tacuman 21, Commended to Fiona Ryan for Bridle Track (Hill End), and special mentions went to Georgia Fanning, Oliver Stokes Hughes and Alice Pulvers.

Whilst the Lloyd Rees Award drew entrants from across Australia, the Eve Vonwiller remains a local art prize, concentrating on students from schools in the North Shore area. Mayor Scott Bennison opened the festivities and then handed over to the Award's judge, artist Yve Close to present the certificates and prizes.

Angela Zhou was the winner of the High School section and Rosa Wei received a highly commended award, both students from Burwood Girls High School. In the Upper Primary section (Year 3-6) Isabelle Fisher of Currambena School won first prize, Highly Commended went to Inika Sunder of Eastwood Public School and Jessica Procopio of Greenwich Primary School received a Commended Award. In the Lower Primary section (Year K-2) Oscar Roche of Holy Family Catholic Primary won first prize, Olivia Cheng of Ryde Public School received a Highly Commended Award and the Commended Award went to Owen Khamlu of Lane Cove Public School.
